Blount's Five TDs Throwing Lead Pioneers To 55-42 Victory At Conference Arch-Rival Bentley
Box Score
WALTHAM, Mass. (Oct. 7) - Senior quarterback Rob Blount was 12-for-21 passing for 280 yards and 5 touchdowns in three quarters of work Friday night, and ran for 77 more yards on nine carries to help the C.W. Post football team, ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Northeast Region rankings, to a 55-42 rout over host and regionally fifth-ranked Bentley, in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
With the victory, the Pioneers (5-1, 5-0 NE-10) extended its NE-10 road winning streak to 11 games, and sent the host Falcons (5-2, 5-1 NE-10) to their first conference loss of the year. Additionally, C.W. Post snapped a two-game losing streak to its conference rival.
After Blount (43 career touchdown passes; third all-time at CWP and one away from second place) found wide out Ryan Heller on a left-side, 20-yard fade with 11:25 to go, the Pioneers defense allowed one Bentley first-down before forcing a Falcons punt. The ensuing play from scrimmage for CWP resulted in the longest pass play of Blount's four-year starting career, an 88-yard touchdown strike to junior transfer Bryce Stephens over the middle to put the visitors up by a 14-0 count.
The Pioneers continued their offensive onslaught after a Jarrell Walker interception, scoring one play later on a 28-yard pass from Blount to Chris Bone (three catches, 107 yds., 2 TD) to up the advantage to 21-0 with 6:11 left in the opening quarter.
Bentley used a 14-play drive to pull within 21-7 with 9:24 left in the first half on a five-yard pass from Kelley Rowe to Kyle Goodwin. However, freshman tailback Anthony Lazarus (17 rushes, 139 yds.) took a screen pass from Blount and walked in from 20 yards out with 6:22 left in the half to push the advantage back to 21 points.
After the teams exchanged two possessions apiece to start the second half, Bone caught a pass from Blount on a ricochet on yet another first play of a drive, out-kicking the defense 67 yards to put C.W. Post up by a 35-7 count.
Then, with 2:13 left in the third quarter, Lazarus ran up the middle and sprinted to a 60-yard score to increase the advantage to 42-7. For the South Ozone Park native, he has now rushed for a score in each of his first six collegiate games.
The fourth quarter started very well for CWP, as Maurice Baker forced a John White fumble on a passing attempt, which Stephon Solomon scooped up and ran back 18 yards for a touchdown to put the Pioneers up 48-7.
However, White led a Falcons resurgence from there on out in the fourth quarter, tying an NCAA single-quarter record with five touchdown passes to decrease the Pioneers' margin of victory. In total, he was 20-for-31 passing for 380 yards and the five scores in just one half of action.
Head coach Bryan Collins's Pioneers do not have any time to rest on Friday night's laurels, though, as they are back at Hickox Field next Saturday (Oct. 15) to play host to a strong Southern Connecticut squad. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 Noon.
