Keith Schweers is in his second year back as an assistant coach with the LIU Post football team, mentoring the running backs.
He last patrolled the sidelines for the Pioneers from 1997-2006, working mainly with LIU Post's backfield unit.
Most notably, Schweers coached the green and gold's all-time leading rusher Ian Smart. From 1999-2002. Smart pounded the football for 6.647 yards and 94 touchdowns. He eventually signed on with the New York Jets after graduation, and later played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the CFL's Scottish Claymores and BC Lions.
In those 10 seasons prior with the Pioneer running backs, Schweers coached three 1,000-yard rushers (Smart, Russell Jessamy, Anthony Lazarus) and one 2,000-yard rusher (Smart). Additionally, he guided T.J. Brocking, a starting fullback from 1999-2002, to All-Northeast-10 Conference status.
Before returning to LIU Post, Schweers held the post of Head Football Coach at St. John the Baptist High School for seven years. Over that time, he compiled an overall record of 41-22 and captured three CHSFL-A Championships.
Schweers resides in West Islip, N.Y. with his four children, Brittany (23), Julia (19), Erin (15) and Liam (12).
