FULL 2017-18 LIU POST ATHLETICS YEAR IN REVIEW

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. –
LIU Post Athletics has had much success in recent history, and this season was no exception. From conference championships, NCAA Championship appearances and athletes recognized for their great play and academic achievements, the Pioneers continued their tradition of excellence during the 2017-18 season.
 
Here are some of LIU Post's highlights from the 2017 – 2018 school year:
 
  • The Pioneers ranked 24th (#1 in the East Region) in the Learfield Director's Cup which is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in both men's and women's sports. The final spot marked the third highest finish for LIU Post in the awards' 24-year history.
  • LIU Post won its sixth-consecutive East Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup and recorded the most points by a school in a decade.
  • 12 Pioneer Teams made NCAA Championship appearances.

  • Field Hockey captured their second straight conference title after defeating Assumption College 4-1. With the win, the Pioneers secured the No. 1 Overall Seed in the NCAA Tournament. The team made an appearance in the Division II National Championship for the fourth time in five seasons.
  • Men's Soccer cruised to their third East Regional Title in Four Years after knocking off second-seeded Adelphi University during the NCAA Tournament.
  • Top-seeded women's lacrosse downed No. 2 Mercy College, 17-11, to capture its fourth consecutive East Coast Conference title.
  • Softball claimed their first East Coast Conference title since 2014 defeating No. 3 seed Molloy College in the championship round.

  • 16 Pioneers received recognition as Conference Players of the Year:
  • Junior Karis Fuller was named Swimmer of the Meet at the Metropolitan Conference Championship. Fuller was part of five first-place finishes throughout the event, earning three individual first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke.
  • 18 Pioneers received All-America honors:
  • Men's Soccer defenseman Johan Mauritzson was named the United States Coaches' Scholar-Athlete of the Year after compiling a 3.50 cumulative grade point average as a business administration major. Mauritzson captained a back line that allowed just 19 total goals this season and helped record eight shutouts.
  • Volleyball junior outside hitter Rachel Londot was named the ECC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The dual major in criminal justice and forensic science boasted a 3.97 cumulative grade point average.
    • The Pioneers also had four Scholar-Athletes of the year for their respective sports, including Dave Brehm (Baseball), Londot, Hillevi Eklow (Women's Soccer), and Talya Williams (Women's Cross Country).
  • Five Pioneer coaches were recognized as Conference Coaches of the Year:
  • Field hockey, led by head coach Raenee Savin, was named the NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • LIU Post student-athletes compiled a 3.30 department GPA for the Spring and a 3.28 cumulative GPA for the year.
  • 17 teams finished with a GPA above 3.0 for the spring
    • 349 student-athletes had a 3.0 or better
    • 194 student-athletes recorded a 3.5 or better
    • 31 student-athletes notched perfect 4.0's
  • Dylan Harned (men's lacrosse) and Mackenzie Hitchcock (women's lacrosse) won the inaugural ECC Elite 18 award. The Elite 18 is presented to student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing in each of the ECC's 18 championships.
