Bridgeport Upsets No. 6 Women's Soccer, 2-1

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2008)- The C.W. Post Pioneers took on East Coast Conference rival University of Bridgeport Friday afternoon, tallying their first conference loss for the season. The Pioneers dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to the Purple Knights, dropping to an overall 15-2-1 record, and 8-1 in the conference. University of Bridgeport improved to 15-3-1 overall, and 7-2 in the ECC.
The University of Bridgeport was the first to put itself on the board. Purple Knights leading scorer Linda Velaj notched her 16th goal of the season, as she dodged Pioneers goalkeeper Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.), shooting into the lower left corner of the net at the 27:09 mark. Teammate Sofia Hoflin put the Purple Knights up 2-0 exactly one minute after Velaj, as she took a ten yard shot into the left side of the net.
C.W. Post senior #Maria Sonnerborg# (Bjarred, Sweden) put the Pioneers on the board n the 67th minute, as she received a feed from teammate Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) to score her 16th goal of the season. Sonnerborg's goal ignited the Pioneers, but the effort proved to be too little to overcome the Purple Knights.
Freshman goalkeeper Allie Weiser had seven saves in net for the Pioneers. Bridgeport keeper Elina Yletyinen made seven stops to bring the Purple Knights out on top.
C.W. Post held a 8-2 advantage over Bridgeport in corner kicks and outshot their opponent 18-13.
C.W. Post takes the field again Nov. 7 at noon for the first round of East Coast Conference playoffs.
