No. 9 Field Hockey Holds Off Adelphi Rally, Wins 4-3

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2008) – Junior forward
Krystal Napolitano (Coram, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Pioneers took an early lead and then held off a late Adelphi rally to earn a 4-3 win over their crosstown rival on Tuesday afternoon on Hickox Field.
Napolitano scored seven minutes and forty-two seconds into the game as she took a cross from
Amy Lillis (Holtsville, N.Y.) and sent a five-yard shot into the lower left corner for a 1-0 Pioneer lead.
Adelphi tied the game just seven minutes later as Jessica Mulhern scored off a Jeanette Heimerle assist, but ten minutes later at 24:23, freshman midfielder
Amanda Miller (Newton, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal off a Napolitano assist to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
Napolitano scored her second goal of the game off an
Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) assist in the 55
th minute, and seven minutes later, Napolitano returned the favor as she assisted Nann's team-leading twelfth goal of the season.
Two goals in a five minute span cut the Pioneers lead to only one goal, but they were able to keep the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the game to earn the win.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) made three saves in the cage, while allowing three goals to improve her record to 8-4. Panther goalie Jacqueline Grant made nine saves in the net.
The Pioneers outshot the Panthers 18-6 and held a 13-3 edge in corners.
