Southern Connecticut Upends Women's Basketball, 82-62

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Nov. 29, 2008) – Freshman center Sarah Schicher and junior forward Jacqueline Johannes each recorded a double-double to lead Southern Connecticut State University past C.W. Post, 82-62, in a non-conference women's basketball clash Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House.
Southern Connecticut improves to 3-2 overall while C.W. Post slips to 2-2 overall.
The Owls shot a collective .439 (29 of 66) from field goal range and went 20-for-25 at the charity stripe while outrebounding the Pioneers by a 45-40 margin. The Pioneers completed the game shooting .403 (25 of 62) from the field and converted 11-of-25 at the free throw line.
Schicher scored 19 points and pulled 12 rebounds off the glass. Johannes scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds for the Owls.
In the first half, the Owls opened the game on a 20-6 scoring streak and led by as many as 26 points with 13 seconds remaining. Southern Connecticut shot a strong 46.7 percent (14 of 30) from field goal range and went 19-for-21 at the free throw line. The Owls guarded the perimeter and kept the Pioneers to a 38.7 shooting percentage while forcing 13 turnovers.
In the second half, the Owls continued their strong offense and maintained a double-figure lead throughout the half, building their lead to 28 with 14:23 remaining.
C.W. Post was led in the half in scoring by senior forward Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.), who tallied 13 points.
C.W. Post chipped the lead down to 16 (75-59) after a lay-up Murrer with 3:40 remaining. The Owls closed out the game on a 7-1 run.
Junior guard Lexi Allen and sophomore guard Logan Lentz each scored 13 points for Southern Connecticut.
Murrer finished with a game-high 23 points for the Pioneers while blocking two shots and adding three steals. Junior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) added 13 points with five assists and two steals and junior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 11 points with four assists and four steals.
C.W. Post will return to action when it opens conference play at Queens College on Dec. 3 at 5 p.m.
