No. 8 Women's Soccer Shuts Out Dowling; Advances To ECC Championship Game Against Bridgeport

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2008)- The C.W. Post women's soccer opened its postseason play, hosting conference rival Dowling College Friday afternoon in the East Coast Conference semifinals, shutting out the Golden Lions 1-0. The win ensures the Pioneers a spot in the ECC championships, as they improve to a record of 16-2-1. Dowling finishes its season with an overall record of 10-6-3.
Both teams held each other scoreless throughout the first half. Both teams took six shots a piece in the first 45 minutes of play, and Dowling held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks over the Pioneers.
Senior
Maria Sonnerborg (Bjarred, Sweden) was determined to keep the game from overtime play, as she ripped a five-yard shot into the top left corner of the net in the 84th minute. Sonnerborg was assisted by teammates
Anna Svensson (Stockholm, Sweden) and
Ivana Babic (Haninge Sweden) as the Pioneers clinched the 1-0 win over the Golden Lions. The goal was Sonnerborg's 17th of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Allie Weiser earned another win, as she faced four shots for the afternoon. Weiser's personal record improves to 11-1-1 for the season, with eight shut outs and 47 saves this season. Dowling keeper Alicia Commisso made 11 saves in net for the Golden Lions.
Overall the Pioneers outshot Dowling 19-14 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The C.W. Post Pioneers advance to the East Coast Conference championships and will host the University of Bridgeport Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
