Murrer Scores 1000th Career Point To Lead Women's Basketball Past Mercy, 85-60

Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) scored a game-high 20 points, including her 1,000th career point, as C.W. Post defeated Mercy College, 85-60, Wednesday evening in East Coast Conference women's basketball at Mercy College Gymnasium.
The win is the second straight for the Pioneers as they improve to 4-3 overall with a 2-1 mark in the conference. The loss drops Mercy to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Murrer, who also led the game in rebounding with 13, becomes the 11th Pioneer to reach the century mark in points at C.W. Post. Previously, assistant coach
Basimah Thompson reach was the last to reach the milestone as a senior during the 2007-08 season. Murrer also registered a double-double for the second straight contest after scoring 17 points with 13 rebounds against St. Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 6.
The Pioneers registered a .463 field goal shooting percentage (31 of 67) in the game and held a 48-43 advantage on the glass. Mercy shot .269 (18 of 67) from field goal range.
C.W. Post maintained a steady offense throughout the first half with a 26-2 advantage in the paint while scoring 13 points off eight Mercy turnovers. Leading 13-9 at 15:15 in the first half, the Pioneers opened the game with a 13-0 run over the next two minutes of play that extended their lead to 26-9 with 12:31 remaining.
The Pioneers capped off the first half with back-to-back lay ups from sophomore forward
Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) and to lead 47-27 going into the break.
The offense continued in the second half as the Pioneers outscored the Mavericks by a 38-33 count.
C.W. Post built its lead as high as 37 points with 3:09 remaining. Mercy fought back with a 14-3 run to close out the game but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) finished with 16 points followed by junior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) with 12. Sophomore guard
Emily Hall (Montclair, N.J.) knocked down three baskets from behind the arc to add 11 points for the visiting Pioneers.
For Mercy, senior guard Christina Baxter led the team with 20 points while sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan pulled down 12 rebounds.
C.W. Post will next face Northeast-10 foe American International College on the road Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
