RINDGE, N.H. (Aug. 30, 2008) – Amber Limanni (Mickleton, N.J.) scored one goal and assisted on another as the eighth-ranked Pioneers earned a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Aug. 30.
It was the season opener for both teams as the Pioneers move to 1-0 on the season and the Ravens drop to 0-1.
Both teams played a scoreless 20 minutes to start the game, with sophomore goalkeeper Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) making a save on a penalty stroke by FPU's Danielle Dolan to keep the game scoreless. The Pioneers got on the board in the 21st minute when Limanni took a pass from junior Krystal Napolitano (Coram, N.Y.) and shot past Raven goalie Kristin Tormollan for a 1-0 C.W. Post advantage.
The game remained 1-0 until the 66th minute, when Limanni assisted on sophomore #Amanda Nann's (Hamburg, N.J.) goal to double the Pioneer lead.
The goal would prove to be vital as less then two minutes later, Franklin Pierce's Ashley Abernathy shot past Colern and cut the lead to one, but the Pioneers held FPU scoreless for the last two minutes for the win.
The Pioneers outshot the Ravens by a 20-11 count, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Colern made seven saves in the cage to earn the victory and move to 1-0 on the season. Her counterpart, Tormollan, made 10 saves for the Ravens in goal.
The Pioneers will remain on the road as they face American International on Sunday, August 31 for a 1:30 start.
