OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2009) – Freshman guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored led the game with 26 points and one assist as the Pioneers fell to East Coast Conference rival Dowling College 76-61 Saturday afternoon.
Dowling College inproves to12-5 overall and 6-2 in conference while the Pioneers fall to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in their conference.
The Golden Lions shot an impressive .722 (13-18) from the free throw line and knocked in 11 of 27 from the three point arc. C.W. Post shot .378 from the field, capitalizing on 28 of 74 attempts.
The Pioneers were the first to put themselves on the board, as Joyner scored the first two of her 26 points off a layup. The two teams went basket for basket through the first 11 minutes of play, before Dowling went on an 18-6 point streak. Junior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) took the last shot of the first half, hitting a 3-pointer for the Pioneers and closing out the first twenty minutes of play with a score of 47-32. Moore earned herself a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the afternoon.
The Pioneers attempted to rally back in the mid point of the second half, outscoring their opponent by a 14-5 margin, but the efforts were no enough to down the Golden Lions. Senior forward Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) finished the afternoon with nine points and seven rebounds for C.W. Post.
Graduate student Christie Marrone led her team with 25 points and three assists. Dowling proved the depth of their team, scoring 35 points of their bench.
C.W. Post is set to host crosstown rival Adelphi University in the fourth Annual Winter Reunion. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
