Men's Soccer Defeats St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2009) – The C.W. Post men's soccer team, behind goals from
Betim Bajrami (Helsingborg, Sweden) and
David Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College, 2-0, on a blustery Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference men's soccer matchup.
With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the ECC, while St. Thomas Aquinas slips to 4-8-1 and 1-4 in conference action.
The Pioneers took a lead thirty minutes into the game, when
Andreas Backstrom (Sodra Sanby, Sweden) fed a pass to Bajrami, who sent a ten-yard shot into the lower left corner.
Leading 1-0 coming out of the halftime break, the Pioneer doubled their lead when Carlsson beat St. Thomas Aquinas goalkeeper Nicholas Croce to his right, then sent a shot into the back left corner for the 2-0 advantage.
Pioneer graduate student
Shane Flanagan (Dublin, Ireland) made 11 saves in goal, posting the shutout and improving to 7-5-1 on the season. Croce made eight stops for the Spartans.
STAC outshot C.W. Post by a 19-17 count and each team took three corners apiece.
Men's soccer, on a three-game winning streak, looks to continue their strong play in conference as they travel to NYITA on Tuesday, Oct. 20, for a 3 p.m. matchup.
