BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2009) –
The C.W. Post men's soccer team reeled off its fourth straight win, as Andreas Backstrom (Sodra Sanby, Sweden) headed in the game winner in overtime to push the Pioneers past neighboring rival and East Coast Conference opponent New York Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 8-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the ECC. The Pioneers have won six of their last seven games. NYIT slips to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
NYIT took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as Andree Lee slid a pass to Farah Toure, who beat a Pioneer defender and sent a shot into the right half of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
But C.W. Post answered right back in the opening minutes of the second half, and #Betim Bajrami# (Helsingborg, Sweden) scored his team –leading sixth goal of the season, and unassisted tally at 47:39 to knot the game at one.
The Bears pulled ahead again, this time with Lee scoring on a through ball in the box from Charles Paracat at 50:54, but C.W. Post kept the pressure on, outshooting the hosts by a 10-2 count in the second half.
The pressure paid off as NYIT scored an own goal at 77:50 to tie the game at 2-2, and neither team was able to score as the game went into overtime.
Finally, in the 92nd minute, James Stevenson (Brighton, England) tossed a long throw-in into the box, and found the head of Backstrom, who registered the game-winner.
C.W. Post outshot NYIT 17-6 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Pioneer keeper Shane Flanagan (Dublin, Ireland) made two saves in goal to earn the win. NYIT keeper Cosimo D'Agostino made seven saves for the Bears in the loss.
C.W. Post looks to continue its winning streak as it hosts Mercy on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
