Men's Soccer Shoots Past Mercy, 4-1

BROOKVILE, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2009) - Emanuel Messina (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored twice and Philip Svensson (Lund, Sweden) added a goal and an assists, as C.W. Post men's soccer rolled past Mercy College, 4-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference men's soccer action.
The Pioneers improve to 9-5-1 overall and 5-2 in the ECC, while Mercy slips to 3-10 and 1-5 in the conference.
C.W. Post wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, as Messina scored on a Svensson assists just 3:20 into the game on a 10-yard shot past Mercy keeper Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland).
Ben Latchford (Sulohill, England) scored the equalizer for Mercy on a penalty kick in the 19th minute as his shot sailed to the right of a diving Pioneer keeper Shane Flanagan (Dublin, Ireland).
Svensson gave C.W. Post the lead for good at 24:14 when he took a free kick from 40 yards out that sailed over the head and just out of the grip of Walsh and into the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage.
Messina struck again at 32:22 when James Stevenson (Brighton, England) sent a perfect cross from the far left side right to the feet of the junior striker, who sent a five yard shot into the right side of the net past Walsh.
The final goal of the day was scored at 60:27 when Andreas Jansson (Tyreso, Sweden) found Niclas Dahlin (Kungalv, Sweden) on a feed from the right side for a 10-yarder into the lower left corner.
On the day, Flanagan made two saves for the shutout, and backup keeper Stephan Rigaud (West Hempstead, N.Y.) played just under twenty minutes holding the Mavericks scoreless. Walsh made six stops in the net for Mercy.
C.W. Post outshot Mercy 29-9 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pioneers play non-conference opponent Concordia on Wednesday, October 28 in a 3 p.m. matchup at home.
