Late Goal Pushes Bridgeport Past Men's Soccer, 3-2

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (Oct. 3, 2009) –
Tied at 2-2 late in the game, Bridgeport's Patric Brundin scored the game winner with just a minute and thirty seconds remaining to give the Purple Knights the win over the C.W. Post men's soccer team, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference soccer action.

 

With the win, Bridgeport improves to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Pioneers fall to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.

 

C.W. Post took an early lead and carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime behind an unassisted goal by Andreas Backstrom (Sodra Sanby, Sweden) at31:35.

 

The Purple Knights tied the game at 1-1 when Curt Sutherland (Branford, Conn.) sent a cross to LeRoux Lothian (Kingston, Jamaica), who snapped a shot into the back of the net at 66:13.

 

Brundin scored his first of two goals on the day, giving the Purple Knights a 2-1 lead at 68:32, driving home a rebound off goalkeeper Shane Flanagan (Dublin, Ireland). 

 

The Pioneers were able to tie the game at 2-2 at the 72:03 mark when #Olof Svensson# (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored off an assist from #Betim Bajrami# (Helsingborg, Sweden).

 

 Brundin scored the game winner just after he hit the post on a penalty kick attempt, but the ball found the feet of LeRoux Lothian (Kingston, Jamaica) who sent a pass to Brundin for the goal and the victory. 

 

C.W. Post held a 19-9 edge in shots taken and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Flanagan made five stops in the net, while Bridgeport goalkeeper Milos Suljagic stopped seven shots.    

 

The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, October 6, at 4 p.m. at Queens College.
