FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2009) – Junior forward Emanuel Messina (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal in the 57th minute, and it proved to be the game winner as the C.W. Post men's soccer team held off Queens College for the 1-0 victory and its first East Coast Conference victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

C.W. Post improves to 5-5-1 overall and 1-2 in the ECC, while Queens slips to 7-4 and 1-1 in the ECC.

The two teams played an even first half, with Queens taking eight shots to the Pioneers' three, and the Knights also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

After a quiet start to the second half of play, Messina found himself one-on-one with Queens keeper Julio Rodriguez from the right side of the field and beat him with a low shot into the back left corner that proved to be the difference maker in the contest.

Queens unleashed considerably more shots than the Pioneers, holding a 18-6 edge, and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the Knights could not come up with a goal, mostly due to graduate student goalkeeper Shane Flanagan (Dublin, Ireland), who was outstanding in the net, making 13 stops for the Pioneers, including three in the last two minutes of play to earn the shutout.

C.W. Post continues its ECC matchups as the Pioneers will host Molloy on Saturday at 2 p.m.
