Women's Basketball Keeps Rolling With 69-67 Win Over Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2009)
– Senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) swished a jumper with three seconds on the clock and converted a free throw as C.W. Post won its first East Coast Conference game of the season with a 69-67 win over Queens College Wednesday evening at Fitzgerald gym.
 
C.W. Post improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECC while Queens drops its season opener to fall to 0-1.
 
Catherall along with junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) registered a game-high 17 points for the Pioneers.
 
C.W. Post shot a collective .441 (26 of 59) from the floor and was 13-for-18 at the charity stripe. Queens shot .410 (25 of 61) from the floor and held a 39-35 advantage in rebounds.
 
The Knights opened the game on a 12-4 run through the first six minutes of play before junior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.) broke it up with a jumper at 13:05. From there, the Pioneers enjoyed an 11-4 run that grew their lead to as much as nine (25-16) with 5:29 left to play in the half.
 
C.W. Post maintained its lead for the remainder of the half and headed to the locker room ahead, 32-27.
 
Queens' returned to the court in the second half with a recharged offense as senior forward Brittany Flaherty (Bethpage, N.Y.) banged down a 3-pointer 33 seconds into the start of the half to cut the Pioneers' lead down to two (32-30).
 
Later in the game, junior center Jamie DiChiara (Smithtown, N.Y.) converted a pair of free throws that tied the game at 41-all with 14:26 on the clock. The Knights scored the go-ahead basket on a long trey from junior guard Christine Harnischfeger (Woodside, N.Y.) at 14:08 that gave the home team the lead for the next four minutes and change.
 
The teams exchanged the lead throughout the half that saw six lead changes and six ties. Queens tied the game for the sixth time and took its final lead (64-63) when senior guard Janine Maser (Malverne, N.Y.) converted a pair of free throws with 2:38 left to play.
 
Freshman forward Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked the lead down to one (67-66) with a jumper at the 33-second mark before sophomore forward Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) stole the ball from Queens and passed it off to Catherall for the game-winning basket.
 
Pawlicki finished the game with 10 points, two rebounds and two steals for the Pioneers.
 
Queens was led by Faherty, who scored 16 points. Junior guard Amanda Bartlett (Mesa, Ariz.) added 11 points for the Knights.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 21 when the team returns to the Pratt to host Chestnut Hill at 1:30 p.m.
