Balanced Offense Powers Holy Family Past Women's Basketball, 60-52

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 28, 2009) – C.W. Post outscored Holy Family 30-26 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome a first half deficit as the Tigers held on to win, 60-52, Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action played at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Holy Family improves to 3-1 overall with the win while C.W. Post drops to 3-2.
Holy Family junior forward Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J.) led the game in scoring with 24 points, shooting 11-for-21 from field goal range.
The first half was a tight game as the teams exchanged the lead five times and tied it up twice. With the score tied at 2-all, sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) poured in a 3-pointer from downtown that gave the Pioneers a 5-2 lead. The Tigers rallied with jumpers from freshman center Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa.) and junior forward Lindsey Tennett (Perkasie, Pa.) to claim their first lead of the game.
Holy Family held onto the lead for the next few minutes until C.W. Post tied the game on a three-point field goal from junior forward Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) at 8:07.
The Tigers answered with a layup from senior forward Nya Daley (Toronto, Ontario) at 7:46. The Pioneers more than matched it with a trey behind the arc from senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) at 6:51 that restored their lead.
The teams once again exchanged the lead in the half as Catherall put the Pioneers up by one (20-19) at 6:09 with a jumper before Carr quickly put in a jumper with 6:00 left to play. The Tigers kept the lead for the remainder of the half as they closed it out on a 13-2 run.
Holy Family controlled the tempo in the second half and built its lead as high as 15 (46-31) with 11:29 left to play in regulation.
The Pioneers cut the lead down beginning with a 3-pointer from Joyner at 11:07 followed by two baskets from Aiken all while keeping the Tigers scoreless over the next two minutes and trailed by eight (46-38) at 9:28.
C.W. Post got back in the game with a layup from Catherall at 3:23 that dwindled the Tigers' lead to six (53-47).
The Tigers responded with a three-point play from Carr at 2:47 that pushed their lead back up to nine (56-47).

Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) scored the Pioneers' final basket of the game with a made free throw at the 59-second mark.
Senior forward Christine McCollum (Abington, Pa.) closed out the game with a made free throw with 42 seconds to play.
Mann finished the game with 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Aiken led the Pioneers with 19 points, converting 8 of 16 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds while dishing out three assists. Also scoring in double figures for the Pioneers was Joyner with 12 and Catherall with 11.
Holy Family completed the game shooting .446 (25 or 56) from field goal range and held a 38-32 advantage on the glass. C.W. Post shot .388 (19 of 49) from field goal range.
C.W. Post is back in action on Dec. 2 at the University of Bridgeport for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
