Women's Basketball Cruises Past New Haven, 71-53; Moore Scores 1,000th Career Point

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Dec. 29, 2009)
– A strong offensive output was enough for the C.W. Post Pioneers as they defeated the University of New Haven, 71-53, in women's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Charger Gymnasium. The victory over the Chargers is the first for the Pioneers since a 73-71 overtime victory on Feb. 9, 1990. 
Junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) paced the Pioneers with 23 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field, including three behind the arc. 
Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 to bring her career total to 1,002 points. Moore becomes the 12th player in the Pioneer program to reach the 1,000-point mark. 
C.W. Post wins its third straight contest and improves to 7-3 overall. The loss dips New Haven's record to 7-4 overall.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead (3-2) early in the game with a 3-pointer from senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) at 19:15 and never looked back as the Chargers trailed for the rest of the game.
The visitors broke the game open in the first half with a 9-2 spurt that began with a long three from Aiken at 12:36 and the Pioneers increased their advantage to 22-11 with 10:23 left to play.
The Chargers whittled the lead down to seven (40-33) with 14:11 on the clock before the Pioneers responded with a 20-3 run that essentially put the game out of reach.
Catherall completed the game with 16 points and dished out five assists as well as five steals for the Pioneers. 
Freshman forward Olivia DeMarco (Watervliet, N.Y.) led the Chargers with 14 points while freshman center Jill Baranger (Fairfield, Conn.) chipped in 13 points.
C.W. Post returns to action Jan. 2 against the University of the District of Columbia for a 4:40 p.m. tip off.
