Offensive Outburst Powers Women's Basketball Over Mercy, 97-53

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2009) – Sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored a career-high 29 points to lead C.W. Post to its second East Coast Conference victory of the season with a 97-53 win over Mercy College Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Overall C.W. Post improves to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ECC action. Mercy College drops its falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The Pioneers completed the game shooting a season-high .574 (39 of 68) from field goal range and outrebounded the Mavericks, 51-32, on the glass. Mercy shot .288 from the floor (19 of 66). The Pioneers offensive output was the highest since they scored 105 points against Concordia College on Feb. 8, 2007.
Mercy drew first blood when junior guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn.) scored a jumper from inside the paint at 19:40. The Pioneers matched it when senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) scored on a layup at 19:24 that started a 9-0 run and was capped off with a 3-pointer from Joyner at 16:12.
The Mavericks tied the game at 12-all when freshman guard Rachel Ferri (Cranston, R.I.) converted a free throw 13:37.
The Pioneers regained the lead courtesy of a free throw from junior forward Janea Aikens (St. Albans, N.Y.) swished a free throw at 12:32 that would give the home team the lead for the remainder of the game. C.W. Post cushioned its lead with 10 unanswered points to lead 28-16.
The Pioneers closed out the first half on an 8-2 run and held an 18-point lead at the break (44-26).
The offense continued to stay healthy in the second half for the Pioneers as they opened the with a 15-2 spurt that built their lead to 61-28 with 16:42 left to play. C.W. Post built its lead to 44 points (97-53) after a layup from freshman center Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 27 seconds to spare.
Joyner led the Pioneers in the second half with 12 points as they converted 22 of 37 from the floor.
Catherall finished the game with 13 points and added seven assists and five steals. Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) added to the cause with a game-high 15 rebounds, eight points, three assists and four steals.
Borofsky led Mercy with 18 points on 7 of 16 shooting and added three steals. Sophomore guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) scored double figures with 10 points and added four assists and four steals.
C.W. Post resumes play on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when it hosts a hot matchup against Dowling College with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
