BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 13, 2009) –
Behind stifling defense and timely scoring, the C.W. Post field hockey team rang up its first victory of the season, a 2-0 blanking on Franklin Pierce, on Sunday afternoon on Hickox Field.
C.W. Post improves to 1-3 on the season while Franklin Pierce drops to 1-5 overall.
After a scoreless 30 minutes of play, the Pioneers finally got on the board, as sophomore midfielder Amanda Miller (Newton, N.J.) took a feed outside the right side of the circle and sent a pass across the goal to junior forward Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) Nann dribbled once and sent a reverse stick shot into the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, C.W. Post would double its lead as Nann sent a corner feed to the top of the circle to Vicky DeRosa (Wading River, N.Y.), who sent a shot into the lower left corner past Raven goalie Brittany Nyzio for the 2-0 Pioneer advantage.
Junior goalkeeper Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) did not need to make a save in the victory, as a stifling defense, headed up by DeRosa, Sydney Hagen (Exeter, N.H.), Kristina Gustafson (New Braintree, Mass.) and Helene Bruckner (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) allowed only two Raven shots all afternoon.
C.W. Post took 14 shots to FPU's 2, and held a 12-3 edge in penalty corners. Nyzio saved four shots in the loss.
The Pioneers are back in action on September 17 as they travel to Shippensburg at 4 p.m.
