Field Hockey Overcomes Slippery Rock in Double Overtime, 2-1
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2009) – The C.W. Post field hockey team overcame a 1-0 first-half deficit, tying the game late in the second half and scoring the eventual game-winner in the second overtime period to come away with a 2-1 defeat of Slippery Rock on Saturday morning on Hickox Field.
C.W. Post improves to 2-4 overall while Slippery Rock slips to 1-5 overall.
The Rock took an early 1-0 lead at 10:45 into the first half, as Slippery Rock executed a corner to perfection, with Allie Hartman sliding a pass to her right to Gabrielle Malishack, who sent a shot past Pioneer keeper Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.).
However, C.W. Post began to pressure the Rock defense more in the second half, peppering SRU goalkeeper Lisa Belcastro with shots and forcing her to make seven saves in the second half alone. The offensive onslaught finally paid off in the 62nd minute as junior forward Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) put a shot on goal, which Belcastro saved. However, the rebound off her pads came right to the stick of senior forward Krystal Napolitano (Coram, N.Y.) who sent a laser shot into the lower right corner for the equalizer.
Neither team was able to generate much of a scoring opportunity as the game entered the first overtime, but C.W. Post continued their offensive pressure while playing stingy defense, outshooting the Rocky 6-0 in the first overtime.
Playing their second overtime in as many games, the Pioneers finally notched the win at 87:44, as Nann beat Belcastro to the right side and knocked in the winning goal.
C.W. Post outshot the Rock by a 23-10 count, but SRU held a 14-11 edge in penalty corners. Belcastro ended the game with 14 saves, and Colern made five in improving to 2-4 on the year.
C.W. Post returns to action tomorrow at noon as they take on Merrimack College. The game is also part of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure initiative, as the Pioneers look for support as they “Think Pink” against Merrimack.
