Gustafson, Nann Lead Field Hockey Past No. 4 Kutztown, 4-3, In Double Overtime

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2009)- The C.W. Post Pioneers triumphed over the No. 4 Kutztown University Bears, 4-3, in a double overtime Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference battle Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) contributed two goals to the Pioneers' victory.
C.W. Post Pioneers improve to a 4-5 overall record, 2-3 in conference, while Kutztown falls to 7-3 overall, 2-2 in conference play.
The Bears put themselves on the board first, as senior Lauren Solley (Oley, Pa.) capitalized off of a rebound less than six minutes into play. Nann answered back for the Pioneers at the 22 minute mark during a corner off a feed from teammate Vicky DeRosa (Wading River, N.Y.) to tie the game at one goal apiece. Kutztown junior Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood, Pa.) banked a shot into the left corner just two and a half minutes later to bring the Bears ahead 2-1. C.W. Post senior Krystal Napolitano battled back for C.W. Post, taking advantage of a rebound opportunity to tie the score 2-2 at half.
Kutztown came out fighting in the second half as junior back Katie Brautigan pulled the Bears ahead 3-2 with a penalty stroke. Nann recorded her second goal of the game as she picked up a rebound and shot into the right corner, tying the game 3-3 and forcing overtime play. Junior midfielder Kristina Gustafson (New Braintree, Mass.) clinched the win for the Pioneers as she shot a rebound past Kutztown keeper Emily Falko (Catasauqua, Pa.) into the left corner at the 91:49 mark.
C.W. Post goalkeeper Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) made 17 saves in net for the Pioneers to secure the win. Falko blocked ten shots for Kutztown.
Kutztown outshot the Pioneers 25-23 and held a 20-13 advantage in penalty corners.
C.W. Post is back in action Wednesday, Sept. 30, as they host Millersville University in a PSAC matchup at 4 p.m.
