Women's Basketball Cruises To 71-46 Victory Over District Of Columbia

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 2, 2010) – The C.W. Post Pioneers used a 25-3 run in the first half to command a lead and cruise to a 71-46 win over University of the District of Columbia in the Saturday matinee game of the UDC Women's Basketball New Year's Classic at the Sports Complex.
C.W. Post wins its fifth straight contest and improves to 8-3 overall. The Pioneers will face Washington Adventist Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. District of Columbia slips to 4-9.
Junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with a game-high of 19 points, including 17 in the first half as the visitors completed the game shooting .490 (25 of 51) from the floor. C.W. Post held a 41-32 advantage on the glass.
The Pioneers got out to a sluggish start during the first few minutes of action but after trailing 4-0, Aiken put in a layup that ignited the 25-3 run that lasted until 9:45 when UDC's Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, Va.) knocked down a short jumper.
C.W. Post completed the half shooting .516 (16 of 31) and held the Firebirds to a .333 (8 of 24) shooting percentage.
Junior forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, S.C.) led UDC with eight points.
In the second half, the Pioneers got help from sophomore forward Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) who poured in four baskets, including two behind the arc, for 13 points.
The Pioneers continued to shoot well and held a double-digit lead throughout the entire half, leading by as many as 26 with 1:20 left to play.
Pawlicki finished the game with16 points while sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) chipped in 10. Junior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) dished out seven assists and recorded three thefts.
McGill led the Firebird with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
