Men's Soccer Outlasts Bridgeport, 3-2
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2010) – Graduate striker
#William Lindberg# (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored twice and freshman
Joakim Ohlson (Lund Sweden) netted the game winner in the 71st minute that broke a 2-2 tied and put the Pioneers on top in and East Coast Conference matchup against the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon.
The win sends the Pioneers to 4-4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Bridgeport falls to 5-4, 2-1 in the ECC.
Lindberg put CWP on the board just 2:42 into the match, as his shot deflected off the hands of UB GK Milos Suljagic (Belgrade, Serbia) and into the back left corner of the net. But UB tied the game just six minutes later as Tim Stipo (LaVerne, Calif.) gave the Purple Knights a long throw in from the left side, going right in front of the goal mouth for a five yard-shot by Patric Brundin (Gothenburg, Sweden)past a diving
Ed Shone (Liverpool, England).
But the Pioneers collected themselves on the defensive end and began to pressure the UB goal on offense. Shone did his part to keep the game close, making a diving save on Arnold Hitoaliaj's shot and scrambling to his feet to stop Brundin's shot on the rebound in the 27th minute.
Just after halftime, the Pioneers had two great scoring chances as freshman back
Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) drove the ball upfield and sent a pass into the box. The deflected shot came right back out to him, and he sent a laser shot towards the UB goal, but it was just high of the crossbar.
Just thirty seconds later, sophomore forward
Betim Bajrami (Helsingborg, Sweden) broke free for a shot, but a diving stop by Suljagic kept the game knotted at one.
However, the Pioneers kept peppering Suljagic with shots, and at 53:18, Lindberg took nice pass from
Rumen Kerekov (Sofia, Bulgaria) and beat Suljagic across the goal into the lower right corner for the lead.
But Bridgeport continued to hang around, and a foul in the box gave the Purple Knights a penalty kick at 59:17. Brundin converted, shooting past a diving Shone to the left side, with the ball hitting the goalpost but deflecting in for the score.
However, a determined C.W. Post squad, playing a man down because of a red card ejection, took the lead for good in the 71st minute as Bjoernoe fed a low cross from the left side into to Ohlson, who one-timed the ball from five yards out into the back of the net for the score. A furious defensive effort for the remaining twenty minutes of the game ensured that Ohlson's tally would stand as the game winner.
Shone ended the day with five stops, and Muljagic also turned away five saves.
CWP ended with an 18-11 shot advantage, with 12 of those coming after halftime.
The Pioneers continue action after a week's rest, as they gear up for Dowling College at home on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
