Women's Soccer Ties Up Bridgeport, 1-1
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2010) – The C.W. Post women's soccer team remained determined despite a Bridgeport goal early in the second half, at battled the Purple Knights to a tough 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, with
Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) again providing the scoring touch for the Pioneers.
CWP moves to 5-1-3 (2-0-1) with the draw, and Bridgeport goes to 6-2-1 (1-1-1 ECC).
The game was evenly matched for the most part, with Bridgeport taking 17 shots and the Pioneers with 15, and each team taking 6 corner kicks.
C.W. Post's first opportunity for a goal came in the 13th minute as Babic took a pass from junior midfielder
Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) and beat two defenders, but shot just wide of the goal. Thirty seconds later, freshman forward
Alexa Niciforo's (East Islip, N.Y.) chip from the left side went just wide.
The Pioneers had another chance at 19:29, when Niciforo found an open Babic inside the box, but the resulting shot was directly at Bridgeport keeper Julia Colley (Harlow, England).
Bridgeport came up with a nice defensive save in the 25th minute as senior back Quaroline Nahl (Kumla, Sweden) got off a shot following a corner kick, but Ceri Harris (Bury St. Edmunds, Wales) was in position to make the stop, and the game remained scorelss.
Pioneer keeper
Allie Weiser (Grand Island N.Y.) did her part to keep UB off the board, making a lunging save to her left in the 31st minute on a low hard shot by Katie Stanley (Oxon, England).
Perhaps the best chance of the half for the Pioneers came when senior midfielder
Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) sent a pass to senior
Sanna Pettersson (Orebro, Sweden) from just beyond the midfield line. The through ball pulled Colley out of the goal, and Pettersson one-timed the ball towards the open goal, but it bounced just to the left of the goal post.
UB looked to have gained the upper hand as the Purple Knights took advantage of a C.W. Post foul and sent a free kick in towards the goal. Freshman Berglind Bjarnadottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) headed the ball directly at Weiser, who came up with the save, but the loose ball rebound went right to Bjarnadottir, and in the scramble in front of the net, she was able to poke it just past a diving Weiser into the goal.
But the Pioneers showed great resilience and continued to attack, and got the equalizer under four minutes later. Eriksson took a corner kick for the Pioneers, and DeLuca got off a shot. The rebound off Colley's save came to an open Babic, who did not miss as she one-touched into the upper right shelf from eight yards out for a 1-1 game.
Charged up, the Pioneers continued their attack, but both teams struggled to create any real scoring chances and the game remained tied through the rest of regulation and through two overtimes, with UB getting off just two shots in the 20 minutes of extra play and the Pioneers taking only one.
Weiser made five saves in the match while Colley came up with six, as the Pioneers remained unbeaten in conference play with the draw.
C.W. Post's next competition has the Pioneers pitted against Wilmington (Del.) in a non-conference match at home, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.
