Babic's Hat Trick Helps Women's Soccer Trounce Wilmington
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2010) – Senior forward
Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) continued her offensive tear, pumping in seven goals in the last four games, as she tallied a hat trick and added an assist for good measure, leading C.W. Post women's soccer past Wilmington University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 6-1-3 overall while Wilmington bumps to 7-2.
The Pioneers outshot the Wildcats by a commanding 25-6 total, scoring two goals in the first and two in the second stanza.
Babic wasted little time in making her mark on offense, as she fed a through ball to a wide open
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) in the opening minutes of play, but Niciforo was caught offsides and her shot was discounted.
In the sixth minute, Babic got a step on the Wildcat defense, but her shot was directly at Amanda Walters for an easy save.
However, the senior was not easily contained for long as Niciforo fed her a though ball in and Babic did not miss, beating a defender to the left side and sending a 12-yard shot into the upper left shelf for the 1-0 lead.
Babic struck again ten minutes later as she carried the ball from just beyond midfield, beating two defenders and shooting at Walters. The ball deflected off a sliding Walters but Babic sent it into the empty net for a 2-0 lead.
Completing the hat trick in the 54th minute on a 12-yard shot, Babic sent a one-touch from a nice
Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) cross, blasting the shot into the top of the goal for a 3-0 lead.
However, Babic's day wasn't finished, and she added an assist in the 59th minute as the Babic-Niciforo combo struck again, with Babic this time feeding a thru ball that Niciforo took into the box, dribbled past the defender and fired into the lower left corner.
That would be all the scoring needed for the Pioneers as they rolled to the win. CWP outshot Wilmington 12-2 in the first half and 12-4 in the second, recording a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks as well.
Junior net minder
Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) was required to make just three saves in tallying the shutout. Walters made ten in the loss for the Wildcats.
The Pioneers are off until Sunday, Oct. 10 when they have a conference matchup with Dowling at home starting at 1 p.m.
