Late Goal Helps Dowling Topple Men's Soccer, 2-1
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2010) – All the scoring action happened during the opening ten minutes and the last ten of play during the men's soccer match featuring the C.W. Post Pioneers and Dowling College, as Stefan Draskovic broke a 1-1 tie with seven minutes to play to give Dowling the 2-1 victory in East Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Dowling moves to 6-1-3, 4-0-1 in the conference, while C.W. Post bumps to 4-5-1, 2-1 in ECC play.
Jonathan DeFelice scored on a header off a cross from Jorge Ruiz at just 4:53 into the game, giving DC a 1-0 lead.
However, the Pioneers quickly answered back less than three minutes later as
William Lindberg (Gothenburg, Sweden) found the ball in a scramble in front of the net and booted it in from four yards out. Freshman
Joakim Ohlson (Lund, Sweden) was credited with the assist.
After opening with two quick scores, the teams both settled in, and the game was mainly a possession battle, with both teams taking scoring opportunities but unable to convert.
After an intense back and forth battle, Dowling gained momentum with under ten minutes to play, and after a controversial foul call in the 83rd minute, Draskovic converted on a free kick from 20 yards out into the left corner of the net.
Ed Shone (Liverpool, England) allowed two goals on the day, as the Pioneers were credited with a defensive save. Counterpart Chris Kucera made five stops between the pipes for Dowling, who held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks despite being outshot by the Pioneers, 11-7.
C.W. Post will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Caldwell College at 3 p.m.
