No. 21 Softball Takes Two From Bridgeport; 9-0, 13-4; Medina Becomes All-Time Hits Leader

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 13, 2010) – The No. 21 C.W. Post softball team combined for 32 hits and 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep over the University of Bridgeport, 9-0 and 13-4, Tuesday afternoon at Seaside Park. Both games were completed in five innings by way of the mercy rule.
C.W. Post improves to 27-7 overall and 13-1 while Bridgeport falls to 1-30 overall and 1-12 in the conference.
Senior outfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) collected two hits, both in the first inning of the first game, to pass Kelly Geiger as the all-time hits leader with 271 hits after both games. Geiger held the record of 267 since 1996.
The C.W. Post offense scored eight runs in the top of the first in game one on eight hits and one error. Shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.), second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.), Katie Fisher (Barto, N.Y.), Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) Medina, and Kerry Fisher (Barto, N.Y.) all recorded RBI hits in the first inning.
The Pioneers added one more run in the second when senior third baseman Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) led off with a home run to left field.
Medina, Kerry Fisher, Softy and Capella each had a pair of hits in the game for C.W. Post.
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) pitched a one-hit shutout over five innings with 10 strikeouts.
In the second game, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Purple Knights touched starter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) for four runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pioneers answered in the second inning with eight runs on seven hits, including a two-run homer from Softy. The visitors added another run in the third on an RBI single from Bright and scored three more in the fourth with RBI hits from Kerry Fisher and Softy.
Kiser, who came in to pitch the final four innings of the game, kept the Purple Knights scoreless and allowed two hits while striking out four for the win.
Softy finished the game batting 4-for-4 with five RBI and Medina, Kulnis and Capella each had three hits.
C.W. Post hopes to stay hot at the plate when it hosts Northeast-10 conference leader, University of New Haven, on Thursday at 3 p.m.
