BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 15, 2010) – The No. 10 University of New Haven Chargers swept past C.W. Post, 3-1 and 4-1, in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
New Haven improves to 26-2 overall while the losses drop C.W. Post to 27-9.
The Chargers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in top of the fifth inning when senior pitcher Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn.) hit a two-run homer into the left field bleachers.
The Pioneers cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore second baseman Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) hit a one-out solo homer down the right line. Freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) doubled to left center later in the inning but that was all the Pioneer offense could muster as the Charger defense kept them off the bases for the remainder of the game.
Gleason allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts and led her team with three RBI on three hits and a run scored.
Junior Sarah Kiser (Arnold, Md.) was took the loss after being charged with three runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out nine batters.
In the nightcap, New Haven scored one run in the top of the first inning when senior first baseman Meghan Walter (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit an infield single to score freshman shortstop Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn.) from second.
The Chargers added one three more runs in the top of the third, beginning when Gleason hit a bases-loaded single to left field. Walter followed up during the next at bat with an RBI fielder's choice. The third run of the inning came through when senior third baseman Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn.) came home on a throwing error from the outfield.
C.W. Post got on the board in the bottom of the third when freshman designated player Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.) laced a double to left center, scoring senior center fielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) all the way from first.
Capella led off the fifth with a double to left field but did not advance any further as Gleason got the next three batters out with a ground out, a line out and a fly out. The Pioneers tried to get things going again in the seventh when Fisher led off with a double to left center. But the offense could not advance her during the next three at bats as the game ended when Medina grounded out to shortstop.
Gelardi went 2-for-4 at the plate and came around to score twice. Walter was 1-for-4 with two RBI. G
Gleason allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts for the Chargers.
Hardy completed the game batting 1-for-3 with one RBI and Medina was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
C.W. Post returns to conference play when it takes on Queens College on the road Saturday at 12 p.m.
