Balanced Offense Backed By Solid Defense Sends Football To 34-23 Win Over West Chester

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2011) – The C.W. Post football team scored 20 points in the third quarter and came away with a 34-23 win against West Chester University in a PSAC East clash Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.
C.W. Post improves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East while West Chester drops to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Redshirt freshman
Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) completed 14 of 19 pass attempts for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Junior
Grayson Laurino (Boise, Idaho) caught two of those touchdowns for and finished the game with 50 reception yards on three catches. In addition, sophomore running back
Jeff Mack (Bronx, N.Y.) led the ground attack with 126 yards on 21 carries.
The Golden Ram offense put a scare into the game when they scored on the first play of the first drive of the game when quarterback Sean McCartney completed a 75-yard pass from Tim Keyser at 14:43.
The Pioneers evened the score when
Steven Laurino found his brother, Grayson, open and fired a 3-yard pass for a touchdown at 6:19.
West Chester threatened to score on the Pioneers in the endzone again during the next drive with 1
st and 10 at the CWP 25 but settled for a 39-yard field goal from Shawn Leo. Leo put Golden Rams up 13-7 with another field goal – this time from 47 yards out.
The Pioneers climbed back into the game and went ahead with a 2-yard TD pass from Laurino to sophomore running back
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) with 3:14 left in the half. The Pioneers led 14-13 at halftime.
Both teams exploded on offense in the third quarter and combined for 400 yards. The Pioneers dominated that with 234 yards on 25 plays, including 155 yards of rushing.
The Laurino brothers connected again for another touchdown as Steven completed a 18-yard pass to Grayson in the first series of the quarter at 11:49.
The Golden Rams would not go quietly as they put up 10 unanswered points, beginning with a 48-yard field goal from Leo at 10:19 followed by an 81-yard completed TD pass from Matt Carroll to Eric Brundidge at 6:09 to give the visitors a 23-20 advantage.
C.W. Post answered back in the next drive when Mack rushed in for a 15-yard score at 3:25. The Pioneer defense was relentless all day and it made another great play during the first snap of the Golden Rams' next drive when junior defensive back
Evan Flowers (Brooklyn, N.Y.) intercepted a pass at the 50-yard line. The home team made good on the opportunity as Mack rushed the ball 35 yards to the 15 and gained more ground after a personal foul was called against the Golden Rams. The Pioneers scored when Laurino passed for seven yards to junior wide receiver
Sean Persch (Gap, Pa.).
The Pioneer defense accounted for 70 tackles (including 15 for loss), nine sacks (loss of 51), a forced fumble, three interceptions, four pass breakups and four QB hurries.
Senior inside linebacker
Ronnie Modik (Levittown, N.Y.) led the defense with 12 tackles, including a 10-yard sack and two tackles for loss of 10. Senior defensive end
Andrew Jackson (Middletown, N.Y.) recorded two sacks for loss of 24 yards and also had two QB hurries in the game. Senior inside linebacker
Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) also had a 25-yard interception return in the game.
The quarterback tandem featuring Carroll and McCartney combined for 328 yards of passing and two touchdowns. Tim Keyser caught six passes for 160 yards and one touchdown. He also led the rushing with 40 yards.
Eric Edwers led the Golden Ram defense with 12 tackles and a pass break up.
At halftime, junior offensive lineman
Rob Scheuerer (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was presented with the Durrell “Bronko” Pearsall Award by head coach
Bryan Collins along with George Sandas, the Hempstead Fire Department, FDNY Rescue 4, and Pearsall's cousins, Thomas and Dominic Moffo. The award is given each year to a player who personifies Durrell's unselfish dedication to his teammates. Pearsall was a member of the FDNY Rescue 4 who made the Supreme Sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001.
