No. 6 Field Hockey Powers Past Mercyhurst, 7-3
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2011) – Led by
Helene Bruckner's (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) two goals, six different players scored for the sixth-ranked field hockey team en route to a 7-3 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday morning.
The Pioneers improve to 7-3 on the season while Mercyhurst drops to 4-7.
The Lakers started off the game hot, and caught the Pioneers on their heels in the first ten minutes of play as they took a quick 2-0 lead. Katlyn Heitzhaus and Tesa Ramsdell scored in the third and seventh minute respectively to give Mercyhurst the early advantage.
But C.W. Post responded with two goals in a two-minute span, jump started by Bruckner's first of the day, and long shot from out on the left wing that went just inside the lower post at 11:07.
Less than a minute later at 12:01,
Bethany Semlear (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) scored on a corner as she hit a hard shot that tipped off a defenders stick and into the net.
Mercyhurst responded quickly, as Tracey Mason send a slide pass to the left on a corner, and Serena Slattery shot it into the right side, giving the Lakers the lead again.
But just before halftime, C.W. Post's continuous offensive pressure began to pay off. At 27:47,
Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) sent a long pass up field finding
Kathryn Godshalk (Hilton, N.Y.) in the circle. Godshalk beat one defender then placed a shot into the lower left corner to tie the game at 3-3.
Two minutes later, Bruckner struck again, this time on a goalie deflection that she redirected into the back of the net, putting the Pioneers ahead 4-3.
Just before halftime,
Lyn-Marie Wilson (St. Michael's, Barbados) took a rebound and worked the ball into the lower right corner, giving C.W. Post a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Pioneers tacked on two more goals in the second half, as Brucker took a long pass from midfield and sent a hard cross across the goal mouth, finding Dragon, who one-touched a shot into the lower right corner at 40:10.
Paige Albano (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring when she took
Ashley Oracewski's (Bay Shore, N.Y.) free hit into the circle and sent a shot into the lower right corner.
The Pioneers outshot Mercyhurst 16-10 and held a 12-7 edge in corners.
Devon Trenkle (New City, N.Y.) earned the victory with two saves in 61:16, before giving way to
Kerianne Rojas (Townsend, Del.) who played the last 8:44.
C.W. Post returns to action on October 4 as it hosts Bloomsburg in 4 p.m. PSAC East matchup.
