Laurino's Four TD's Lead Football to 42-27 Victory Over Cheyney;Pioneers Clinch Share Of PSAC East Title

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 5) – Freshman quarterback Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) threw for 156 yards and four touchdowns, as he led the C.W. Post football team to a 42-27 win over visiting Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Cheyney on Saturday afternoon. C.W. Post improves its overall record to 6-4 and 6-1 in the PSAC East, clinching a share of the PSAC East title with Kutztown.
Laurino tossed a 21-yard pass to Ryan Derham (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to open the scoring in the first quarter as the Pioneers opened the game with a 7-0 lead.
The Wolves knotted the game at 7-7 on quarterback Chris Anderson's five-yard run just three minutes later in the first quarter.
The Pioneers pulled ahead on a 27-yard Laurino connection to sophomore Joe Botti (Holtsville, N.Y.), putting C.W. Post ahead 14-7.
Cheyney responded yet again with another Anderson keeper that resulted in a 1-yard TD run, but the Wolves missed the PAT and the Pioneers held a 14-13 lead.
C.W. Post increased its lead to 21-13 with another score before the half on a six-play, 67-yard drive, as Laurino connected with his third different receiver of the half, this time a 38-yard heave to sophomore Kyle Hardy (Matawan, N.J.).
The Pioneers accounted for all the scoring in the third quarter, as sophomore running back Jeff Mack (Bronx, N.Y.) turned in a 57-yard touchdown run and fellow sophomore running back Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) caught a four-yard pass from Laurino, giving the hosts a 35-13 advantage as the third quarter wrapped up.
Sandwiched between two Cheyney fourth-quarter scores was a 56-yard Laurino TD run, as the Pioneers held the Wolves at bay for the victory.
Offensively, in addition to Laurino's 156 passing yards, he rushed 14 times for 74 yards while Mack ran the ball 22 times for 164 yards. Brunetti was the Pioneers' top receiver with three catches for 41 yards as Laurino distributed the ball around to seven different receivers during the game.
On the defensive end, Anton Rukaj (Greenburgh, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 10 tackles, while Kadeem Huggins (Corona, N.Y.) registered 2.5 sacks on the afternoon.
For the Wolves, Isaiah Fleming made 11 tackles on the day, while Anderson threw for 160 yards and Prince Stewart had seven receptions for 71 yards.
The next game for head coach Bryan Collins's Pioneers is Nov. 12 at 12 noon, when C.W. Post will host its final home contest of the season. The scheduled opponent is Slippery Rock, but depending on changes in the PSAC standings, the opponent could change.
