Potent Offense Drives Women's Basketball To ECC Final With 78-67 Win Over St. Thomas Aquinas

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (March 5, 2011)
– The C.W. Post women's basketball team will be heading to its first East Coast Conference Championship final for the first time since 2007 after knocking off top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas, 78-67, in the semifinal round Saturday afternoon at Hubbell Gymnasium.
 
C.W. Post improves to 16-12 overall and will face the winner of today's Dowling/Bridgeport semifinal on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans,N.Y.) led the game with a career-high 35 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from downtown, and was 14-for-16 at the free throw line.
 
In addition, junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) added 22 points to put her career total in a Pioneer uniform at 1,002.
 
C.W. Post grabbed an early 10-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, closing out the half with a 38-33 lead. Aiken led the Pioneers with 18 points while Joyner added 12. 
 
The Pioneers continued their dominance in the second half and Aiken and Joyner once again led the half in scoring, pouring in 17 and 10 points, respectively. C.W. Post built its lead to as high as 12 (60-48) with 6:41 remaining in the game.
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting .434 (23 of 53) from field goal range, including 9-of-14 from long range, and went 23-for-35 at the line. Senior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward Anthia Smith (Elmira, N.Y.) also helped the cause with nine points and five rebounds.
 
St. Thomas Aquinas shot .366 (26 of 71) from field goal range and outrebounded the Pioneers, 44-42. Sloper led the Spartans with 18 points.
