Plompen's Six Points Carries No. 2 Men's Lacrosse To 15-12 Win At No. 6 Mercy

– A 5-0 lead in the first quarter proved to be a difference maker for the No. 2 C.W. Post Pioneers as they held off the feisty No. 6 Mercy Mavericks for a 15-12 win in an East Coast Conference men's lacrosse tilt Wednesday afternoon.
 
C.W. Post improves to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in the ECC while Mercy slips to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
 
The Pioneers led 5-0 through the first quarter as senior attacker Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) tallied the final two goals to lead the team. Junior midfielder Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) tallied the game's first goal followed by goals from senior defensive midfielder John Wood (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.).
 
The Mavericks got on the board in the second when Quadear Mike scored on a pass from Mike Marzocca.
 
The Pioneers answered back with three unanswered goals, including two from junior attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) and one from Messina to take an 8-1 lead.
 
Mercy rallied to score six unmatched goals leading into the third quarter and cut the lead down to 8-7. C.W. Post outscored Mercy, 5-12, to take a 13-9 lead with 13:06 left to play in the fourth.
 
The Mavericks cut the lead back down to two with a pair of goals from Marzocca in just over a minute and a half span with 10:04 on the clock.
 
The Pioneers got two more goals in the game from Rodriguez and junior midfielder Brad DeSouza (Trumbull, Conn.) to secure the lead.
 
Mercy added one more goal at 2:56 from Jesse Wood but that was as far as the Mavericks would come in the game.
 
C.W. Post outshot Mercy, 43-32, and held a 33-23 advantage in ground balls. Senior midfielder Ronnie Irving (Glen Head, N.Y.) won 16 of his 30 face-off attempts in the game.
 
Plompen finished the game with five goals and an assist to lead the Pioneers while Coric and Rodriguez each registered a hat trick.
Senior Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made seven stops in goal for his 14th win in goal this season. 
 
Mike led the Mavericks in scoring with three goals while Wood added two goals and an assist. T.J. DiCarlo made 14 saves between the pipes.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Saturday at Dominican College at 1 p.m.
