CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The No. 22 California University (Pa.) Vulcans amassed 516 offensive yards and six touchdowns en route to a 41-13 victory over the C.W. Post Pioneers in a late Saturday afternoon PSAC crossover game at Adamson Stadium.
California (Pa.) improves to 1-1 overall while the Pioneers slip to 0-2. C.W. Post will travel to play next Saturday at Mercyhurst College at 12 p.m.
The first half was a rough start for the Pioneers as they allowed 393 offensive yards and 21 points for the Vulcans, including 262 passing yards from quarterback Peter Lalich. Thomas Mayo was on the receiving end for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
In the Pioneers' first drive of the game, senior tight end
R.J. Kuhn (Sayville, N.Y.) fumbled a six-yard pass from freshman quarterback
Tyler Heuer (Oceanside, N.Y.), who made his first collegiate start, which was recovered by the Vulcans at the CWP 43. Cal. U. capitalized on the opportunity and scored on the very next play when quarterback Peter Lalich completed a pass to Thomas Mayo.
The Vulcans added their second score of the game when Edwin Gowins scampered in for a 3-yard TD with 9:26 on the clock. The third touchdown came when junior punter
Grayson Laurino's (Boise, Idaho) punt on fourth down of the drive was blocked by Rontez Miles and returned for a 38-yard touchdown by Mario Washington.
C.W. Post broke up the shutout with a 4-yard rush from junior
Thomas Beverly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) into the endzone. The drive started when freshman defensive lineman
Kevon Foster (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sacked Lalich and forced a fumble that was recovered by junior defensive back
Antonio Powell-Fields (Hempstead, N.Y.).
In the second quarter, Cal U. maintained its momentum and scored its fourth touchdown on a 7-yard run from Gowins. And less than three minutes later, the Vulcans were on the board again with a 50-yard TD reception from Mayo from Lalich to push the lead to 34-6.
Cal. U. added one more score in the third quarter when Gowins rushed in his third TD of the day on a 9-yard run.
The Pioneers scored the game's final touchdown when Beverly muscled his way into the endzone from four yards out with 6:47 left on the game clock.
The Vulcans completed the game with 516 offensive yards, the highest for a C.W. Post opponent since last season's game at Kutztown (520).
Lalich was 16 for 25 with two interceptions for 272 passing yards and two TD's. Mayo was good for six catches for 180 yards and two TD's. Gowins finished the day leading the Vulcans with 93 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Brian Justice led the game with 12 tackles and a sack on defense.
Heuer completed 13 of 29 pass attempts with no interceptions and three sacks for 103 yards. Sophomore running back
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) led the rushing corps with 59 yards on 12 carries. Beverly finished his day with 42 rushing yards and on 16 carries for two touchdowns. Laurino caught three passes for 36 yards.
