Football Drops Season Opener To American International In Overtime, 13-7

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2011) – The C.W. Post football team dropped its season opener by way of overtime against American International, 13-7, Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.
The game tied at 7 going into overtime, the Yellow Jackets scored the game-winning touchdown when Markell Rice intercepted a pass from redshirt freshman
Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) and returned it for 95 yards.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game up just under a minute into the fourth quarter as Kevin Arduino completed a 26-yard pass to Andre Samuels.
C.W. Post attempted to take back the lead in their third drive of the fourth quarter on a 37-yard field goal attempt from freshman
Marc Montana (East Amherst, N.Y.) with just over three minutes to play. But the kick was ruled wide by the field judges.
AIC attempted a field goal with four seconds to play in regulation but Daniel Backs' kick fell short of the goal post and forced the game into extra frame.
C.W. Post grabbed 7-0 lead just before halftime when senior tight end
R.J. Kuhn (Sayville, N.Y.) brought down a 3-yard pass from Laurino with 1:13 left to play in the second.
C.W. Post finished the game with a total of 308 offensive yards on 69 plays. Laurino was 12-for-21 with three interceptions and recorded 107 passing yards and one touchdown. He also led the team on the ground with 82 rushing yards on 23 carries.
AIC amassed 300 yards on 71 plays as Arduino completed 12 of 27 pass attempts for 151 yards with two interceptions. He also carried the ball 15 times for 115 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior inside linebacker
Billy O'Connor (Sayville, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 13 tackles along with a 26-yard interception. Senior inside linebacker
Ronnie Modik (Levittown, N.Y.) added 12 tackles while sophomore outside linebacker
Tommy Williams (Westbury, N.Y.) had 11 and senior defensive lineman
Lou Scala (Coram, N.Y.) had 10.
Jaquawne Simpkins led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 14 tackles along with a sack.
C.W. Post will travel to play No. 12 California (Pa.) next Saturday. The Vulcans suffered a 26-3 loss to No. 13 St. Cloud State in their season opener Thursday evening.
