Strong Second Half Rallies Men's Soccer Past Concordia, 2-1
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2011) – The scoring tandem of sophomore
Cemil Turan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) continued to lead the way for C.W. Post men's soccer, as the Pioneers rebounded from an early deficit to score two second-half goals and come away with a 2-1 win over Concordia on Wednesday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 3-0 while Concordia slips to 0-3 on the season.
The Clippers surprised the Pioneers, playing their 2011 home opener, with a goal just 2:13 into the contest, and the visitors forced a defensive turnover and pushed several men into the box. The ball deflected off a Pioneer right to the foot of Ekene Okereke, who placed a 10-yard shot into the lower left corner to put Concordia on top.
The Pioneers gained momentum as the half continued, but were unable to find the equalizer as they went into halftime down 1-0.
But the momentum carried over to the second half, and despite heavy rain and slippery field conditions, C.W. Post applied continuous offensive pressure. A streaking
Andreas Olson (Oppeid, Norway) took the ball up the right side, beating one defender and sending a cross from the edge of the box, where Turan was waiting near the left goalpost. His perfectly placed header went into the right side of the net and tied the game up at one all.
The Pioneers began to control the tempo and dominate possession, peppering Concordia's Oscar Acosta-Mendez with shots, but could not break through. Finally, with 4:48 remaining in the contest, Olson again sent a cross from the right side, and Austboe one-timed a shot into the left corner for what would be the eventual game-winner.
A strong defensive effort allowed CWP keeper
Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) to pick up his third victory of the season, as he needed to make only two saves in the contest. Acosta-Mendez faced 22 shots on the afternoon, making six saves as the Clippers were outshot 22-5. CWP also held an 8-2 corner advantage.
The Pioneers look to extend their win streak to four as they face off against Dominican on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2:30 p.m. The match will be played at Skelos Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
