NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 8, 2011) –
The C.W. Post field hockey team opened the 2011 season with a 7-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University Thursday evening in a non-conference match-up. The Pioneers got a boost from senior midfielder Bethany Semlear (Sag Harbor, N.Y.), who led the team in scoring with a career-high nine points on four goals and an assist. The win also gave head coach Raenee Savin her 70th career victory, making her the all-time winningest coach in program history at C.W. Post.
 
C.W. Post improves to 1-0 overall and will host Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 12 p.m. Southern Connecticut drops to 1-3 overall.
 
Savin's record wins eclipses the previous mark held by Nancy Buttler, who coach at C.W. Post from 1978-83.
 
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead during the first 10 minutes of play in the first half, beginning with senior defender Helene Bruckner's (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) shot off a penalty corner on a pass from Semlear and senior forward Kathryn Godshalk (Hilton, N.Y.) at 5:23.
 
Semlear scored the next two goals with Godshalk assisting on both plays at 7:14 and 9:55.
 
Godshalk added her to stat sheet with a goal of her own on a low shot in the mid circle at 12:28. Bruckner scored her second goal of the night on a rebound shot out front at 28:55 to give the Pioneers a 5-0 advantage heading into halftime.
 
C.W. Post outshot the Owls by an 18-2 count in the first half and held a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners.
 
Semlear remained hot in the second half and added two more goals at 40:19 and 46:47 to close out her night.
 
Senior goalkeeper Devon Trenkle (New City, N.Y.) made five stops in goal for the shutout.

The Pioneers completed the game outshooting the Owls, 31-9, with a 16-9 edge in corners.
