No. 7 Women's Soccer Edges Wilmington, 2-1
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2012) – The No. 7 LIU Post women's soccer team extended its win streak to seven games with a 2-1 victory over visiting Wilmington University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 11-1-1 overall while Wilmington evens at 6-6-2.
Sophomore
Rebecca Swedberg (Stockholm, Sweden) got the Pioneers on the board in the 19th minute as she headed a corner kick by sophomore
Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) into the net.
The Pioneers controlled the pace and outshot the Wildcats by a 13-3 count for the remainder of the first, but went into the half up by only 1-0.
The Wildcats evened the score in the 65th minute after a free kick from just past midfield bounced around in the box before Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins finally kicked it in.
But the Pioneers calmly recovered and regained the lead just two minutes later as
Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) slipped a pass to find junior
Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.), who lined a low shot just inside the left post for a 2-1 lead.
Senior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) made one save in the victory, while WU keeper Ashley Kroll made 12 saves in her first start of the season in goal.
The Pioneers held a 23-7 advantage in shots along with a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Next up for the Pioneers is a visit to neighboring NYIT this
Saturday for a 12 p.m. tilt.
