SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference announced on Monday that Long Island University/LIU Post would be joining the conference as an associate member in the sports of football and field hockey beginning in the fall of 2013.

With the move, the league office also announced a slight change to the Northeast-10 Football Championship Weekend format.

With the addition of LIU Post, it now gives the conference 10 members competing in the sport of football and 12 programs in the sport of field hockey.

"We are excited to enter into the Northeast-10 Conference after five years away," said LIU Post athletic director and head football coach Bryan Collins. "We're excited about the opportunity to renew past rivalries, and we look forward to competing against these fine institutions."

"The Northeast-10 is pleased to extend associate membership to LIU Post in the sports of football and field hockey, said Northeast-10 commissioner Julie Ruppert. "This is a win-win situation for both the Northeast-10 and LIU Post in both of these sports, and we are excited about entering this partnership."

"The Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Council unanimously approved the institutions' admission because they fit so well within our geographic footprint, and thus provide an opportunity to responsibly control our financial resources by adding contests to schedules without incurring out-of-region travel. LIU Post's ongoing commitment to these two sports is important to the region and we are happy to welcome them into the Northeast-10."

With the addition of LIU Post, the Northeast-10 has also adjusted its 2013 Football Championship format. As was the case last year, the regular-season champion will still play host to the second-place finisher; however, the other matchups have shifted.

The team that finishes third during the regular season will now host the team that finishes fourth, while the fifth-place finisher will host the eighth-place finisher. The team in sixth place following the completion of the regular season will play the team in ninth place, and the 10th-seeded team will travel to take on the seventh-seeded team. There will be no changes made to the Northeast-10 Field Hockey Championship, as the top six teams will compete for a conference title with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye into the semifinal round.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
