Women's Swimming Completes First Day at NCAA Championships

MANSFIELD, Texas (March 14, 2012) – Three events were on the schedule for the C.W. Post women's swimming team today at the NCAA Championships, beginning day one of the four day championship.

Tamara Garriock (Duncan, Canada) started things off for the Pioneers with competition in the 200 individual medley preliminaries.  The sophomore finished with a 2:07.26 time during the preliminary run, however, did not make the finals cut as she finished in 20th place. 

Qualifying for the finals in the 50 free after her preliminary round, Cornelia Hanes (Stockholm, Sweden) finished in a three way tie during the preliminary for 13th place in a time of 23.54.  She then completed the consolation finals with a time of 24.01 to earn 16th place and giving the Pioneers one point towards the overall standings and individually an All-America Honorable Mention honor.   

The final event of the day was the 200 medley relay, as Garriock and Hanes joined Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) and Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) to form the relay team.  During the preliminary race, the Pioneers finished in a time of 1:45.55 that completed a new Pioneer record in that event.  The group accumulated six points towards the team score with a 14th place time of 1:46.19 during the finals run and also All-America Honorable Mention.

At the end of day one, the Pioneers currently have totaled seven points to place the team in 23rd place.  Also with the first day in the books, Wayne State holds a marginal lead in first place with a total of 134 points to lead all teams.
