Softball Splits Weekend Series With Dowling

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 14, 2012) – C.W. Post split a doubleheader with Dowling College, winning the matinee game, 5-2, before falling in the nightcap, 6-4.
C.W. Post improves its record to 31-15 overall and 19-3 in ECC action. Dowling improves its record to 22-13 overall and 15-7 in conference play.
The Pioneers staked themselves to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one that included a two-RBI double to left center from freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) as well as RBI singles from sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and sophomore designated player
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.).
The Golden Lions scored one in the bottom half of the first when shortstop Stephanie Tarango singled up the middle to score right fielder Amber O'Malley, who had reached on an infield error.
Dowling added another run in the second on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half.
The Pioneers boosted their lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Weber laced an RBI single to right field to bring home Hagenah from third.
Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) picked up her fifth win of the season when she pitched the final four innings and kept the Golden Lions scoreless while allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) pitched the first three innings and scattered six hits and two walks with two runs.
Alisa Fjelstad was handed the loss after giving up the four runs in the first. Erika Nogan came into the game with one out in the first and gave up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts through six and two thirds innings.
Weber finished the game batting 2-for-2 with two RBI. Hagenah batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Dzierzynski was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
In game two, C.W. Post once again took the lead in the second with a lead-off home run from Dzierzynski, her ninth of the season.
The Pioneers maintained their tight lead though three innings before the Golden Lions' offense erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth that started with a two-run homer from designated player Deana Tortorici with two outs. Tarango drove in the third run of the inning with a double down the left field line while catcher Emily Slack followed with a single through the left side to score first baseman Jamie Laird from third. The final two runs came home on an infield error.
The Pioneers mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh with three runs that began with a two-run double to right center from senior left fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) that scored sophomore
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) and junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.). Fisher advanced to third on the same play on an error by the centerfielder and came around to score the third run. But that was all the damage the Pioneers would cause in the inning as new pitcher Kait Ellingsworth came in and induced two ground outs to close out the game.
Tarango led the Golden Lions at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Nogan picked up the win after pitching six and two thirds innings and allowing three earned runs on seven this and two walks with four strikeouts.
Freshman center fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and Weber each batted 2-for-3 while Fisher led the Pioneers with two RBI on one hit with a run scored.
Weber was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Bettles came in relief in the fifth and gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks. Freshman
Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Pioneers.
