Softball Cruises Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-1 And 6-1

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 3, 2012) – C.W. Post swept a pair of games against St. Thomas Aquinas by identical scores of 6-1 in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
 
C.W. Post improves to 21-11 overall and 9-1 in the ECC while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 4-18 overall and 0-18 in conference play.
 
The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles from sophomore shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and freshman catcher Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.).
 
C.W. Post added two more to its lead in the third on an RBI double to right center from Dzierzynski that scored sophomore third baseman Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and an RBI single from sophomore pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.).  Weber drove in a run when she doubled to center field that scored sophomore Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) from second.
 
The Spartans got on the board in the sixth when catcher Toni Ann Groth homered to left field.
 
The Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored freshman centerfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) from second base.
 
Dzierzynski led the Pioneers at the plate with two hits with two RBI and a run scored.  Weber pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine batters.  Freshman Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pitched the seventh inning and allowed one hit while striking out one batter.
 
Maura Power was charged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.  Designated player Katie Meyers led the Spartans with two hits.
 
In game two, C.W. Post took another 2-0 lead in the first and Dzierzynski hit a two RBI double to left center that brought home Gonzalez and Hagenah.
 
The Pioneers scored three more in the third starting with an RBI triple from senior right fielder Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) that scored Havens from second.  Palazzo scored on an infield single from Gonzalez.  Junior first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) tallied the third RBI with a single to center that scored Gonzalez.
 
St. Thomas Aquinas scored a run in the top half of the fifth when centerfielder Rachel Hannawalt singled to right field to score left fielder Michelle Sasso, who reached on a double.
 
The Pioneers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Hagenah blasted her eight home run of the season to left center.
 
Gonzalez and Hagenah each finished with an RBI and two runs scored while Dzierzynski had two RBI on one hit.  Palazzo was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) pitched a complete game and allowed one run on nine hits with four strikeouts.
 
Hannawalt batted 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Meyers, who started the game in the circle, took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits.  Megan Sweezy came in relief and gave up one run on two hits.
 
C.W. Post returns to action Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at the University of New Haven.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
