Big Innings Lead Softball Over NYIT, 11-0 And 8-0

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 6, 2012) – C.W. Post's offense unloaded to win a pair of games in a sweep over NYIT, 11-0 and 8-0, Friday afternoon at the NYIT's Softball Complex.
C.W. Post improves to 23-11 overall and 11-1 in conference play while NYIT falls to 7-19 and 3-8 in the ECC.
In the first game, the Pioneers put up six runs in the top of the third inning on six hits. Senior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) doubled to score freshman center fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) from first for the first run of the game. Sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) followed in the next at bat with an RBI single to center field. She later scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore designated player
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) while senior
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) plated two more runs with a single to right field. Havens got another turn at the plate in the inning and singled to drive in junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.Y.), who was hit by a pitch.
C.W. Post added one run in the fifth on an infield error before erupting for four more runs in the sixth inning that was highlighted by a leadoff home run Gonzalez as well as an RBI single from freshman pitcher
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) and a bases-clearing triple from Fisher that scored two runs.
Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game. Fisher led the Pioneers with four RBI on two hits.
Salcido pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits for her 10
th win of the season. Freshman
Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) came in to pitch the sixth inning and kept the bases clean while finishing with one strikeout.
Natasha Milosevich was handed the loss after giving up six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts through the first three innings. Makenzie Jones came in relief and let up four earned runs on five hits.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers score two runs in each of the second and third innings before recording another big inning with four runs in the fourth.
Fisher drove in the game's first two runs with a single through the right side in the second. In the third inning, Gonzalez singled and scored Havens, who led off the inning with a single. Weber recorded her second sac fly of the day to score Palazzo, who was hit by a pitch.
In the fourth inning, sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) singled through the left side to score Havens and put the visitors ahead, 5-0. Freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) came to the plate with two runners on and bashed her sixth home run of the year over the center field wall to score the last three runs of the game.
Weber earned her 10
th win of the season, pitching four scoreless innings with two hits and six strikeouts. Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched the fifth inning and let up one hit and a walk while striking out one batter.
Havens batted 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while Dzierzynski was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Weber batted 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Fisher went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Both teams will face each other again on Saturday at C.W. Post's home complex. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. The Pioneers will be promoting “Score For A Cure” to promote awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.
