BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 7, 2012) – The C.W. Post softball team won both ends of a doubleheader against neighboring New York Institute of Technology, taking an 11-3 victory in game one and winning the nightcap 10-1.  Both games were five-inning contests, shortened by the mercy rule.  The game was also part of the Pioneers' “Score for the Cure” campaign, with all proceeds going to the fight against Multiple Sclerosis.

C.W. Post improved to 25-13 overall and stand at 13-1 in East Coast Conference play.  NYIT slid to 7-21 overall and 3-10 in conference action.

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the game on a sacrifice fly to center field by Adrianna Valencia that plated Melissa Bradway.

The Pioneers scored three in the bottom of the first courtesy of back-to-back homers by Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.).

NYIT tied the game with two runs in the second as an outfield error allowed two runs to score.

However, the Pioneers took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the second, as Gonzalez drove in another run on an infield grounder and Hagenah worked a bases-loaded walk.

C.W. Post put the game out of reach with six runs in the fourth to take an 11-3 lead, with the big blow coming on Megan Salcido's (Brawley, Calif.) three-run double to left center.  Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) also had an RBI single in the inning.

Salcido earned the win, going four innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits.  Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Catherine Havens (East Northport, N.Y.), Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.)  each had three hits in the game, while Gonzalez and Salcido each drove in three runs.

In the second game, the Pioneers scored one in the first as Havens led off with a single and scored on a throwing error on an infield groundout.  The Bears tie the score in the second on an RBI single by Maura Cien-Mayer.

But C.W. Post did damage with a six-run second inning that started with a home run by Dzierzynski.    After a walk to Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and a single by Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.), Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) doubled to right field to drive in both runs.  An RBI single by Havens and a two-run single from Hagenah gave the Pioneers a 7-1 lead.

The Pioneers pushed across three more in the third as Bright homered to left center with two runners on base and the hosts held a 10-1 lead.

Weber earned her 11th win of the season with four innings pitched, allowing one run on three hits, striking out five.  Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) worked a scoreless fifth inning in relief.

Offensively, Bright led the way with a 2-for-2 showing with five RBI and two runs.  Havens also added two hits.

The Pioneers travel to Bridgeport on Monday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
