No. 6 Field Hockey Opens 2012 With 5-2 Win Over Southern Connecticut

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2012) – LIU Post opened its 2012 season with a 5-2 win over Southern Connecticut State University Thursday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey contest on Hickox Field.
LIU Post improved to 1-0 while Southern Connecticut slipped to 1-3 overall.
Junior forward
Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) led the attacking with a pair of goals in the 10th and 24th minute that gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Southern Connecticut got on the board at the 28-minute mark when Randi Schock scored on a penalty stroke.
LIU Post responded with a pair of goals from freshmen
Heidei Schaffner (West Long Beach, N.Y.) and
Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) before the end of the half.
Sophomore forward
Lyn-Marie Wilson (St. Michael's, Barbados) scored her first goal of the season on a redirect tip out front from senior midfielder
Ashley Oracewski (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who had two assists in the game.
The Owls scored their second goal in the 47th minute when Kayla Quinn tipped a shot into the left corner from out front on a feed from Bailey McGinnis.
LIU Post outshot Southern Connecticut by a 32-9 count and held a 17-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore
Becca May (Swedesboro, N.J.) made five saves in goal to preserve the win for the Pioneers. Audrey Dolloff made 13 saves in goal for the Owls before Robin Donaldson came in to play the final 18 minutes.
LIU Post travels to play at Franklin Pierce University on Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.
