Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2013) - On Thursday afternoon, the LIU Post women's soccer team notched a goal in each half, en route to a 2-0 victory versus Holy Family in a non-conference duel at Robert Blitz Field in Brookville, N.Y. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 9-3 on the season.
It only took LIU Post 1:17 to get on the board. Senior forward Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.) fired a 20-yard shot from the top of the box to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage.
Holy Family (5-5-2) looked to respond later in the session. In the 20th minute, Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J.) put an attempt on net from point-blank range, but sophomore goalkeeper Katelyn Phillips (Littleton, Colo.) gobbled it up to maintain the hosts' one-goal edge, which they took into the break.
In the latter stanza, the Tigers outshot the Pioneers by a slight 7-6 edge. However, the green and gold got the lone marker of the period. Nearly 11 minutes in, senior forward Alexa Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied her seventh goal of the year to make it a 2-0 game. Sophomore midfielder Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) earned the assist, after sending a cross into the box for a streaking Niciforo.
For the contest, LIU Post recorded 13 shots to Holy Family's nine. Between the pipes, Phillips made three saves. Her counterpart, Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa.), recorded four stops.
Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers now begin a short two-game road trip Saturday (Oct. 19) in Sparkill, N.Y. at St. Thomas Aquinas. Kickoff is set for noon.
