No. 2 Men's Soccer Dominates Daemen, 9-1
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2013) - Trailing 1-0 nearly four minutes in, the second-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team responded with nine unanswered goals Sunday to defeat East Coast Conference newcomer Daemen, 9-1, in Brookville, N.Y. Junior forward
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) netted a hat trick in the victory.
The Wildcats (3-8, 0-5 ECC) drew first blood in the contest at the 3:45 mark. Senior forward Kyle Clifford (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored on a breakaway to give his squad a quick 1-0 edge.
The Pioneers, however, answered with five goals, four of which in a span of 6:28, to bring a 5-1 advantage into the break. Austboe tied it with 23:43 elapsed, when he received a through ball from senior midfielder
Jonathon Watkin (Doncaster, England), and fired a shot into the mesh for the equalizer.
Later in the period, Austboe would put the hosts in front for good. On the play, sophomore back
Carl Lystad (Oslo, Norway) sent a cross from right of the 18-yard box that was punched home by the country's leading point-getter, making it a 2-1 game.
Under four minutes later, Lystad got on the board for some insurance, heading in a
Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway) feed, to extend the LIU Post advantage to a pair at 3-1.
Austboe eventually added one more goal in the waning seconds, while senior back
Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) converted on his third penalty kick in as many games with 1:14 remaining, to send the Pioneers (10-0, 4-0 ECC) into the locker room with a commanding 5-1 cushion.
In the second half, it was more of the same. Four different players found the back of the net for the green and gold. Junior midfielder
Vincent Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y.) and freshman forward
Johann Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) collected goals, via passes from junior midfielder
Dusan Gargurevich (Quito, Ecuador). The tally for Tavernese was the first of his collegiate career.
Senior forward
Cemil Turan (Staten Island, N.Y.) added one as well, via the PK, and sophomore forward
Cameron Gamble (North Lanarkshire, Scotland) rounded out the scoring.
Between the pipes, senior keeper
Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) and junior netminder
Mathias Spinnars (Ramnas, Sweden) combined for three saves for LIU Post. Juniors Matt Daddario (Amherst, N.Y.) and Daniel Romer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) racked up 10 stops for Daemen.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to the pitch Wednesday (Oct. 9), when they face Nyack in a non-conference road match-up in Nyack, N.Y. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
