BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2013) - In its first year back in the Northeast-10 Conference, the third-ranked and top-seeded LIU Post field hockey team won the NE-10 title, besting fifth-ranked and No. 3 seed Stonehill, 2-1, in Brookville, N.Y. Sophomore forward Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship.

As a result, the Pioneers remain perfect at 20-0, while the Skyhawks dip to 18-3.

It did not take long for a goal to get on the board as the first shot taken by either team found the back of the net. Just 4:32 into the game, junior forward Lyn-Marie Wilson (Bridgetown, Barbados) set the tone for the Pioneers, sending home an unassisted tally off a restart at the top of the circle.

After that score, neither squad could muster any more scoring in the first half. Stonehill had a chance with back-to-back shot attempts after a penalty corner in the 24th minute, but freshman goalie Meredith Stocklin (Mount Laurel, N.J.) made a kick save on Emily Sideris (Watertown, Mass.) shot, and then swatted away the ensuing chance by Kelly Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) to help her squad retain the 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks rattled off five shots, and were granted five penalty corners in the first, while the Pioneers managed just four shots and two penalty corners.

The championship's Most Outstanding Player, Margiotta, doubled the green and gold's lead with slightly under 16 minutes to play when she re-directed a shot by senior forward Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) for her 25th goal of the year.

Not going down without a fight, the nation's leading goal-scorer, Stonehill's Erika Kelly, cut the score to 2-1 in the 64th minute. She received a pass right in front of the cage, and while diving to her left, slipped a reverse sweep into the left of the net, and past a diving Stocklin. That would prove to be the last shot the Skyhawks took on the afternoon.

At the conclusion of the game, the 2013 NE-10 All-Championship team was announced. Making the cut were sophomore midfielder Molly Cuevas of Adelphi, senior defender Sarah Dunbar of Merrimack, Sideris and senior defender Chelsea Emery of Stonehill, and Margiotta, Dragon, and Wilson of LIU Post.

Head Coach Raenee Savin and the Pioneers now await their seeding in the upcoming NCAA Division II Championship. The tournament field will be released on the NCAA.com selection show at 2 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 11).
