Dragon Named NE-10 Player of the Year
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. (Nov. 6, 2013) - After finishing the regular season a perfect 18-0, the LIU Post field hockey team secured two of the five top Northeast-10 All-Conference awards, as announced Wednesday. Senior forward Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) was named the Player of the Year, while Raenee Savin earned Coach of the Year distinction.
A unanimous decision as a member of the first-team and a five-time NE-10 Player of the Week, Dragon is tops in the Northeast-10 and the nation with 75 points on 30 goals (six game-winners) and a conference-high 15 assists for the undefeated Pioneers, who won the Northeast-10 regular-season title with a flawless 10-0 record.
Savin received Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honors, as voted upon by her peers, as she has led the Pioneers to the top seed in the Northeast-10 Championship in their first year as an associate member with the conference in the sport of field hockey. Her squad is currently ranked third in the nation with a perfect 18-0 record, good for the most wins in program history.
Joining Dragon on the first-team were sophomore forward Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) and graduate midfielder Dani Crouse (Westville, South Africa). Margiotta, who was named the Player of the Week for Week Seven, finished the season second on the team with 56 points on 21 goals and 14 assists. She also sent home four game-winning goals, including two of the three Pioneer overtime goals against East Stroudsburg and Stonehill.
A three-time Defensive Player of the Week, Crouse proved to be a potent force on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field over the course of the season. The midfielder finished the season with 13 assists and five goals, totaling the fourth-most points on the team with 23. She also made a defensive save in each of the final two games of the season, including a crucial potential game-winning shot by the nation's leading scorer, Erika Kelly, during the overtime period against Stonehill.
The pair of goalies, Meredith Stocklin (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.), made their way onto the All-Rookie team. Stocklin was a unanimous vote as she finished the season 11-0 between the pipes, shutting out her opponents four times. She totaled 800:45 minutes in goal, making 37 saves, while allowing just 10 goals for a 0.87 goals-against average and .787 save percentage. Parks closed out the season with a 7-0 record in the cage, registering 485:59 minutes along the way. She shut out two opponents and turned aside 29 shots, while allowing just six goals for a goals-against average of 0.86 and an .829 save percentage.
Savin and her LIU Post squad now face Adelphi on Friday (Nov. 8) in a NE-10 Championship semifinal at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y. Action is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
